Fleas. Just the word alone makes you want to itch. And that’s nothing, compared to how your dog feels when he’s actually infested with the tiny pests.

So how can you get rid of the pesky little critters once they’ve made a home on your pet, or make sure they can’t get to your treasure family member in the first place? It’s a matter of removal and prevention.

Fleas manifest themselves at several stages, from pupae that live in the carpet and other household surfaces to fully formed adult fleas, the kind that set up shop on your pet and drive them crazy.

Everyone has battled with a case of the flu at one point in their life, and we all know how lethargic, nauseous and generally terrible we feel…but what about our pets?

As it turns out, while it may appear that your pet suffers from the same bouts of sickness, our four legged friends have their own set of diseases to deal with.

“Diseases are definitely species specific. People come in to the vet assuming they’ve given their pet a cold, but cats and dogs don’t get human diseases,” Yaletown Pet Hospital veterinary technician Amber Lloyd said.
