Here’s a story brought by one of our specialists, Kimberly, partly in response to requests for more cat stories (this means you Ruby).
This is the story of Dewey, an orange tabby cat. On a cold dark winter night in January 1988, a tiny tabby kitten was deposited into the return box of Spencer, Iowa’s public library. The people of the Spencer library decided to adopt the cat for the library, and a contest was held to name him. The winning submission was “Dewey Readmore Books”, or “Dewey” for short, presumably for the Dewey Decimal cataloging system.
Dewey soon became a fixture at the library and settled into his job of animal good will ambassador and companion.
Over the years Dewey became a bit of a celebrity, with his story being featured in various newspapers and even local TV shows. Dewey was the star at the Spencer library. People from everywhere came to visit the Spencer library just to see Dewey.
Dewey held his post of resident library cat for 19 years. There’s even a book written about him “Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World” by Vicki Myron.
